Real Life Gallery from 1962

These photos were taken during the 1962 Oxford University Expedition to East Greenland, which was led by author Brian John and his colleague David Sugden.   The expedition had eight members,  and it spent 8 weeks in the Scoresby Sund and Scoresby Land region, with two main camps -- one in Pingodal and the other (designated as Base Camp) in Kjove Land.  Many of the incidents in the novel are based on real events.  Somebody really did get washed away in a meltwater stream; somebody else really did get charged by musk-oxen, and somebody else really did get dumped from his canoe into the sea.........  but luckily nobody was killed.
